It doesn’t get more pitiful than this:
“President Trump praised the work and sacrifice of civil rights activists Saturday during an appearance at the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
Trump took a brief tour of the facility then spoke for about nine minutes to an invite-only crowd of civil rights veterans, museum patrons and elected officials.
“These buildings embody the hope that has lived in the hearts of every American for generations. The hope for a future that is more just and is more free,” the president said.
He spoke of “the fight to end slavery, to break down Jim Crow, to end segregation, to gain the right to vote and to achieve the sacred birthright of equality. … That’s big stuff. Those are very big phrases. Very big words. Here we memorialize the brave men and women who struggled to sacrifice, and sacrifice so much, so that others might live in freedom.” …”
Is this what you call moving the Overton Window?
John Lewis, the Horatio of Selma, bravely boycotted the event. Rep. Bennie Thompson, who represents the Mississippi Delta in Congress, also denounced him. The NAACP called President Trump’s visit “an insult.” Chokwe Lumumba, the black nationalist mayor of Jackson, MS, refused to share the stage with the president. The black community protested his arrival in Jackson.
Civic nationalism is a failure. Even these civil rights activists agree with us. Chokwe Lumumba, Jr.’s father was a black nationalist affiliated with the Republic of New Afrika. He ran on a platform of making Jackson “the most radical city on the planet” which is another way of saying another disaster like Detroit. These people plainly believe in a social order based on black nationalism.
Richard Spencer was right when he wondered if MAGA was the last gasp of something. From tax cuts to civil rights, mainstream conservatism is an exhausted project.
President Trump’s attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum. After President Trump departs, we encourage all Mississippians and Americans to visit this historic civil rights museum. https://t.co/cXo11eGHZw
